WNBA Bans DiJonai Carrington For Life After Sophie Cunningham Incident, No Pension Or Pay

The WNBA has finally handed down its harshest punishment yet against DiJonai Carrington, permanently banning the player from the league following her controversial confrontation with Sophie Cunningham.

Under the decision announced by new WNBA commissioner Alex Bruno, Carrington will be barred from returning to the league and will not receive a pension or any future league-related pay.

The decision comes after the incident involving Cunningham, which sparked widespread criticism and renewed questions about player conduct and accountability across the league.

Bruno said the league reviewed what happened before reaching its decision and concluded that the incident crossed a line that could not simply be ignored.

“What she did was horrible and wrong,” Bruno said. “She intentionally tried to injure another player, and this is something we cannot ignore.”

According to Bruno, the league’s responsibility is not limited to organizing games and protecting the competition itself. It also has an obligation to ensure that players can step onto the court without fearing that another player will deliberately attempt to hurt them.

“There is a difference between playing aggressively and intentionally trying to injure somebody,” Bruno said. “We expect our players to compete hard, but there are limits.”

The commissioner also addressed the controversy surrounding Carrington’s conduct after the confrontation, saying the league took into consideration what happened both during and after the incident.

Officials have been particularly concerned about attempts to minimize what occurred, Bruno said, arguing that accountability does not end when the final whistle blows.

“You cannot have a situation where something serious happens on the court and then everyone simply moves on,” Bruno said. “Players have to be responsible for their actions.”

The lifetime ban means Carrington will no longer be eligible to play in the WNBA or participate in league activities. The ruling also removes her eligibility for pension payments and other compensation connected to her career.

The financial consequences could be significant, particularly because professional athletes often depend on retirement benefits and other long-term compensation after their playing careers end.

Bruno defended the decision despite the severity of the punishment.

“This is not about making an example out of somebody,” he said. “This is about making sure every player understands that deliberately trying to injure another player is unacceptable.”

The decision has already generated plenty of discussion among fans, with some supporting the league’s move while others questioning whether a lifetime ban is too severe.

For the WNBA, however, Bruno said the priority is maintaining a safe environment for players and protecting the credibility of the competition.

“We want physical basketball,” Bruno said. “We want passion, intensity and rivalries. But none of that means players are allowed to intentionally hurt each other.”

Carrington’s career in the league now appears to be over, with the WNBA making clear that it does not intend to reverse the decision.

For Cunningham, the incident has become one of the most talked-about controversies of the season.

For Bruno, the message is simple.

“Every player deserves to feel safe on the court,” he said. “That has to come first.”

The WNBA’s decision now leaves Carrington facing a lifetime outside the league, without the pension or future pay she might otherwise have received.

And according to Bruno, the league has no plans to reconsider.

“What happened was wrong,” he said. “We cannot ignore it.”
