“Total Nonsense”: Elon Musk Lashes Hits Out Against Theory That Having Fewer Kids Will Help The Environment

CAPE CANAVERAL, FL - MAY 27: Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, participates in a press conference at the Kennedy Space Center on May 27, 2020 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley were scheduled to be the first people since the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011 to be launched into space from the United States, but the launch was postponed due to bad weather. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, recently said that the idea that having children is bad for the environment is “complete rubbish.” “Some people believe that having fewer kids is healthier for the earth,” the father of seven stated via video at the All-In Summit. This is just bullshit. Even if we quadrupled the amount of humanity, the ecosystem would be OK.” “At the very least, maintain our numbers,” Mr. Musk said.

We don’t have to expand drastically, but at the very least, let’s not let civilization fade away till we’re all in adult diapers with a whimper.” The Tesla CEO also highlighted Japan’s declining birth rate as an example. “Japan is a leading signal here,” he added, noting that the country’s population fell by 600,000 last year. Mr. Musk suggested that the East Asian nation would “end to exist” due to a plummeting birth rate.

He went on to say that the world cannot allow civilization to perish. He then said unequivocally that having children is not harmful to the environment. Mr. Musk added that it is “vital for preserving civilization.” The SpaceX founder went on to describe some of today’s parents’ anxieties and how they don’t stack up. “I’ve heard it before. Mr. Musk asked, “How can I bring a kid into this dreadful world?” “‘Have you read history?’ I ask. Because, believe me, it was a lot worse back then,” he said.

It’s worth noting that Elon Musk didn’t back up his assertions with proof.

However, it comes after a prior hypothesis gained popularity, claiming that “having one fewer kid per household in industrialized nations may save around 58.6 metric tonnes of carbon per year.” According to CNBC, having a kid is seven times worse for the environment in terms of CO2 emissions than the following ten most talked about individual mitigations. According to a different analysis, however, changing one’s lifestyle and combining it with pro-climate measures might have a higher environmental effect than not having children.
