More than 700 country radio stations have allegedly banned Jelly Roll’s songs following outrage over his recent controversial comments, in what insiders are describing as one of the most sweeping radio bans involving a country artist in recent years.
The alleged decision comes as backlash against Jelly Roll continues to spread across parts of the country music community. The singer has faced criticism after making jokes about President Donald Trump and becoming more outspoken about his political views.
According to journalist Alex Bruno, radio stations began receiving significant pressure from listeners demanding that Jelly Roll’s music be removed from their playlists.
“Listeners were calling, emailing and sending messages constantly,” Bruno said. “A lot of stations felt they had no choice but to listen to their audience. Once the complaints started coming in by the hundreds, continuing to play Jelly Roll became a difficult decision for many programmers.”
One Texas station reportedly went even further, allegedly instructing its DJs to play “anything else” rather than Jelly Roll’s music.
According to the account, one programmer jokingly told staff that they could play “static” if necessary, as long as Jelly Roll’s songs weren’t played.
The alleged ban could significantly reduce Jelly Roll’s presence on country radio, where regular airplay has played an important role in promoting his biggest hits and collaborations.
Radio analyst Alexandro described the situation as unusual but not necessarily straightforward from a legal perspective.
“This move is legal, but awkward,” Alexandro said. “Country music is something that anyone can listen to—unless they don’t agree. There’s always an asterisk at the end.”
Jelly Roll’s music catalog includes several songs that have received substantial radio exposure, meaning that removing his music from hundreds of stations could have a noticeable impact on his visibility.
Among the songs reportedly affected are “Need a Favor” and several of his recent collaborations. If the stations continue avoiding his music, programmers could instead fill those slots with other established country artists or newer acts looking for additional exposure.
The controversy comes at a difficult moment for Jelly Roll, whose crossover success has made him one of the most recognizable names in modern country music. His career has been built around connecting with a broad audience, particularly listeners who related to his personal story and unconventional path into country music.
