James Woods has fired back at Whoopi Goldberg after the actress and longtime host of The View criticized him on the air, calling him a “clueless, ignorant coward.”
The exchange began after Woods declined an invitation to appear on the daytime talk show. Rather than accepting the decision quietly, Goldberg used the program to take a shot at the actor, questioning why he would refuse an opportunity to join the conversation.
Woods didn’t wait long to respond.
“Whoopi, what’s going on?” Woods asked. “You used to be intelligent and witty. But now you are nothing more than a DEI cheerleader for wokeness.”
The actor then addressed Goldberg’s suggestion that he was uninformed, pointing to his academic background and saying he has no problem discussing politics — he simply doesn’t want to do it by shouting across a television studio.
“Just to let you know, I’ve got a PhD in political science, so I’m well-educated,” Woods said. “I just refuse to get into screaming fights with five angry women sitting at a table with their coffee.”
The response quickly became the latest chapter in a long-running culture-war clash between Hollywood personalities with sharply different political views.
Woods has built a reputation for speaking openly about his conservative views and frequently criticizing progressive politics. Goldberg, meanwhile, has been one of the most recognizable voices on The View, where political debates regularly become part of the show’s format.
For Woods, however, appearing on the program apparently wasn’t worth the potential confrontation.
Rather than sitting at the table and debating several hosts at once, he chose to stay away and respond on his own terms.
That decision appeared to frustrate Goldberg, who criticized him after he declined the invitation.
Woods, however, turned the criticism back toward the show.
He argued that refusing an invitation should not automatically be interpreted as an inability to defend one’s views. In his view, there is a difference between being afraid of a debate and simply deciding that a particular format isn’t worth participating in.
“I don’t need five people talking over me to prove that I can defend my position,” Woods said.
The exchange also highlighted the very different styles of political discussion favored by the two sides.
For Goldberg and the hosts of The View, the show’s format often involves several personalities debating current political and cultural issues at the same table.
Woods said that kind of environment isn’t for him.
“I’ve spent enough time studying politics to know that screaming doesn’t make an argument stronger,” he said.
The actor’s response quickly drew attention online, particularly his comments about Goldberg’s transformation over the years.
Woods suggested that the person he once considered intelligent and funny had been replaced by someone much more focused on repeating the latest progressive talking points.
“Whoopi, what happened?” Woods asked again. “You used to be sharp. You used to make people laugh.”
Goldberg has not publicly responded to Woods’ latest comments, leaving the exchange hanging after the actor’s pointed reply.
For now, Woods appears perfectly comfortable staying away from The View.
He declined the invitation, refused to play along with the show’s format and then answered Goldberg directly.
If Goldberg was expecting Woods to quietly accept the criticism, she apparently chose the wrong target.
