“I am humbled by the response from the country artists following my statement regarding leaving politics out of my performances,” Ed Sheeran said as he reflected on the unexpected wave of support that followed the controversy surrounding his decision.
What started as a disagreement over politics quickly became a major headache for Sheeran’s tour. The situation worsened after Sheeran stopped working with Macklemore following political statements made by the rapper during concerts.
The fallout didn’t end there. Several other opening performers decided they no longer wanted to participate in the collaboration, leaving Sheeran with fewer artists available for upcoming shows. In an even bigger setback, members of Sheeran’s own band reportedly refused to continue performing with him.
With several concerts still ahead, Sheeran was suddenly faced with the difficult task of finding musicians willing to step onto the stage with him.
Then George Strait stepped forward.
Shortly after finishing his own concert in Texas, the country music legend reached out to Sheeran with an offer that caught the British singer completely off guard. Strait suggested that Sheeran use his band for the next five concerts in Florida.
“I was stunned by the offer from George,” Sheeran said. “Even if I didn’t find anyone, he promised that he would personally start the concert. How can you not fall in love with such a man?”
The gesture reportedly left Sheeran deeply grateful, particularly because Strait wasn’t simply offering musicians. He was offering a solution at a moment when Sheeran’s touring plans had become increasingly complicated.
For Sheeran, the support also represented something bigger than simply filling empty spots in his band.
“The country community made me feel extremely honored,” Sheeran said. “It is quite an amazing experience.”
Strait’s offer came as Sheeran continued defending his decision to keep politics separate from his performances. Sheeran has said that while musicians are entitled to their personal opinions, he wants his concerts to remain focused on music rather than political debates.
That position has generated plenty of discussion, particularly after the controversy surrounding Macklemore and his departure from the tour.
But amid the criticism, Sheeran said the support from country musicians has been something he never expected.
“I never imagined that I would receive this kind of support,” he said. “I came here to make music, and suddenly some of the biggest names in country music are reaching out to help me.”
The singer also praised Strait for making the offer without asking for anything in return.
“George didn’t ask me to change anything,” Sheeran said. “He didn’t tell me what I should say or how I should perform. He simply said, ‘Use my band. We’ll help you.’”
According to Sheeran, that kind of gesture is difficult to forget.
“I think that’s what music is supposed to be about,” he said. “People coming together when someone needs help.”
With Strait’s band reportedly ready to join him for five Florida concerts, Sheeran now has a new reason to look forward to the next chapter of his tour.
And after the controversy that pushed several musicians away, the singer says the unexpected support from the country music community has given him something he needed most: a reminder that he isn’t standing alone.
