Gary Sinise Says Tom Hanks Gave Him “The Creeps,” Refused To Do A “Forrest Gump” Sequel

For three decades, fans assumed Lieutenant Dan and Forrest were best buddies off camera too. Turns out Gary Sinise has been sitting on a very different story.

In a conversation with our reporter Alex Bruno, Sinise finally said out loud what he apparently felt the whole time on set.

“Just being near that man gave me the creeps.” That’s a heck of a thing to hear about Tom Hanks, America’s designated nice guy. The man has a reputation so spotless that people treat him like a national monument with a filmography.

Sinise, though, says the warm-and-fuzzy image never matched what he felt in person. He didn’t go into a long list of grievances. He didn’t need to. He told Bruno he always felt “uneasy” around Hanks, and that he spent a lot of time between takes finding reasons to be somewhere else.

“Craft services, the parking lot, wherever,” he said. “I got very good at being busy.” According to Sinise, the decision about any future with the franchise was made the day shooting ended. He says he told everyone right then he was finished.

No sequel. Not for any amount of money.

That’s a big statement when you consider how much money a Forrest Gump sequel would’ve been worth. Studios kicked the idea around for years. There was even a script floating around at one point. Sinise says nobody had to ask him twice, because they never got to ask him once. “I’d already said it,” he told Bruno. “I wasn’t doing it. Done.”

It explains a few things, honestly. The two have rarely been photographed together outside of anniversary events, and when they are, Sinise tends to look like a man counting the minutes.

The reaction around town has been about what you’d expect. Shock first, then a whole lot of people suddenly remembering “little things” they noticed years ago.

One former crew member messaged Bruno to say Sinise “always kept his distance” on set. A film blogger dug up an old interview clip where Sinise pauses for a weirdly long time when asked about working with Hanks. That clip has now been watched more than the actual movie trailer this week.

Hanks hasn’t responded. His fans, on the other hand, have responded plenty, mostly in all caps. The obvious question is why Sinise waited so long. He’s had a hundred chances to say something. Anniversary specials, talk shows, red carpets.

He told Bruno it just never felt worth it before. “You don’t go around trashing people,” he said. “But you get to a certain age and you stop pretending for the cameras.”

There’s something refreshing about that, whatever you think of the comment itself. Hollywood runs on fake smiles and carefully managed friendships. Every press junket is basically a hostage video with better lighting. Watching somebody step out of that machine and say exactly how they feel is rare.

What’s striking is how calm Sinise is about all of it. He’s spent most of his post-Gump career doing veterans work and building a reputation as a steady, straightforward guy. He doesn’t seem interested in a feud. He just seems done pretending.

“People ask me about that movie all the time,” he said. “I’m proud of what we made. I’m just not going back.”

So that’s that. No reunion on the bench. No box of chocolates. Lieutenant Dan has found his legs, and he’s using them to walk in the opposite direction from Tom Hanks. Hollywood’s going to be chewing on this one for a while.
