Colin Kaepernick just got himself banned from every NFL stadium for life. He tried to bring back the old kneeling routine one more time. The former quarterback showed up at a San Francisco 49ers home game last weekend, according to people at the stadium. He didn’t have a ticket for the sideline, but he had a story.
Kaepernick convinced the security staff to allow him entry to the sideline through his claim of being a “correspondent journalist.” Stadium workers say he had a lanyard, a notebook, and a confident attitude. Nobody stopped him.
“He walked up like he owned the place,” one security guard said. “He said he was covering the game for some outlet. We get a lot of media, and honestly, it’s not unusual.”
Once the national anthem began playing, he stepped three feet forward and knelt down.
It was the same move that made him famous in 2016, when he began kneeling during the anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice. That protest set off a nationwide fight, split fans, and ultimately ended his career. He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016.
This time, though, almost nobody noticed.
No camera captured this action. The broadcast crew was focused on the field, the players were lined up for the anthem, and most fans in the stands were looking at the flag. Only a handful of people on the sideline realized what was happening.
The security staff escorted him out of the stadium immediately after.
“It took about thirty seconds,” said a team employee who saw it. “Two guys came over, took him by the arms, and walked him out. There wasn’t a scene. He didn’t fight it.”
The league moved quickly. By Monday afternoon, the NFL had informed Kaepernick that he was banned from all of its stadiums for life. A league source said the decision had less to do with the kneeling and more to do with the way he got onto the field.
“You can’t lie your way onto the sideline,” the source said. “That’s a security problem. It doesn’t matter who you are.”
Kaepernick’s supporters were outraged. Some said the ban was proof that the league never forgave him for his original protest. Others said he had every right to make a statement and that the NFL was overreacting.
But plenty of people weren’t sympathetic. Critics said he was trying to grab attention and that pretending to be a journalist crossed a clear line.
“He just can’t stop kneeling,” one league source said. “Ten years later, same move, same result.”
“He’s been gone almost ten years,” one fan said. “Nobody’s thinking about him anymore. That’s why he had to sneak in.”
The 49ers declined to comment beyond confirming that an “unauthorized individual” had been removed from the sideline before kickoff. The team said it is reviewing how credentials are checked.
Kaepernick has not responded publicly. No impact. Just like always.
