The Academy of Country Music has reportedly issued a lifetime ban to Jelly Roll following his recent controversial remarks, adding another major development to the growing backlash surrounding the singer.
The alleged decision comes after Jelly Roll sparked controversy with his recent political comments, including jokes about President Donald Trump during his guest-hosting appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! His remarks quickly spread across social media and triggered strong reactions from both supporters and critics.
Now, according to the account, the Academy has decided to permanently distance itself from the singer.
Executive director Alex Bruno told the media that the organization had spent time reviewing the situation before reaching its decision.
“After everything we’ve seen recently, we decided enough is enough,” Bruno said. “His new woke direction doesn’t align with our values.”
Bruno said the Academy also believes Jelly Roll has lost sight of the fans who helped establish his career in country music.
“He really doesn’t care about the fans who made him a country star,” Bruno said. “His Academy ban will be effective immediately and is not appealable.”
The alleged ban would represent a dramatic change for Jelly Roll, who has become one of the most recognizable crossover artists in modern country music.
Jelly Roll’s path into country music has been anything but traditional. After initially building an audience through rap and hip-hop, he successfully crossed into country music and developed a massive following. His personal story, musical style and ability to connect with different audiences helped him become a major presence in the genre.
However, his recent political remarks have put that relationship under pressure.
Jelly Roll has defended his right to express his opinions and later described himself as being somewhere around the middle politically. Still, some country music fans have accused him of moving too far away from the audience that supported him during his rise.
Bruno said the Academy could not simply ignore the controversy.
“We have to think about the people who support country music and the artists who represent this organization,” Bruno said. “There are certain lines that cannot be crossed, and we believe Jelly Roll crossed one.”
The alleged lifetime ban could also raise questions about Jelly Roll’s future involvement with other major country music organizations, awards events and industry gatherings.
For an artist whose career has been closely tied to the country music community, losing access to one of its major institutions could have significant consequences.
Supporters of Jelly Roll, however, may see the decision differently. They could argue that an artist should not lose professional opportunities simply for expressing political opinions that some members of the audience disagree with.
The controversy nevertheless continues to grow, with Jelly Roll now facing criticism from a portion of the country music community that once embraced his unusual rise into the genre.
The singer has not publicly responded to the alleged lifetime ban.
For now, the Academy’s message is reportedly clear: Jelly Roll’s recent choices have consequences, and the organization does not intend to reverse its decision.
As one observer might put it, Jelly Roll appears to be firmly in the “finding out” phase now.
