Elon Musk: “Kevin McCarthy should be Speaker”

Elon Musk Endorses a Candidate in the House Speaker Election

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, used his platform early on Thursday to declare his endorsement for Rep. Kevin McCarthy during a tumultuous election for the position of next House speaker.

As of Thursday morning, GOP holdouts opposed to McCarthy becoming speaker have prevented him from winning in six rounds of voting.

Musk tweeted at the crack of dawn on Thursday, “Kevin McCarthy should be Speaker.”

Following a total of six votes held over the course of two days, Congress has now adjourned until Thursday at noon, at which time it is anticipated that a seventh vote will be held for the position of speaker.

Capitol Hill sources believe McCarthy is coming around to accepting compromises he previously rejected as a means of securing the 218 votes he needs to become speaker of the House.

Among these compromises is a provision allowing for a “motion to vacate” by a single member of the House, which would need just one Republican vote in order to remove the incumbent speaker from office.

Providing members of the extremely conservative House Freedom Caucus with positions on the influential House Rules Committee and holding a vote on whether or not members of Congress should be subject to term limits are two other potential reforms.

Donald Trump, a former president, openly proclaimed his support for McCarthy as a speaker on Wednesday.

“Some very nice discussions took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA,” the former 45th president posted on his Truth Social platform Wednesday morning. THE ONLY SPEAKER IN AMERICAN HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE “HOUSE” TWICE! REMIND REPUBLICANS: “DO NOT TRANSFORM A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIGANTIC AND EMBARRASSING DEFEAT.”

On the other hand, by the evening of Wednesday, Trump had recognized that the stalemate and the subsequent internal talks within the Republican Party “will wind up making the Republican Party STRONGER and more UNITED than it has ever been.”

A “huge Republican VICTORY tonight,” according to Trump’s statement on Thursday, would make the office of House speaker and the selection process “BIGGER & MORE IMPORTANT than if it were done in the more conventional manner.”
